I love it when inspiration surprisingly strikes. I recently watched a presentation from fine-art photographer, Todd Hido. His photography really affected me. While we both enjoy shooting at night, our work is a little different. I shoot primarily with black and white film and Todd does amazing work with, often muted, color. But we both are looking for scenes that capture a certain mood/feel.
Although doing photography at night has been one of my passions for several years now, for the past few months, in an effort to keep thing fresh I’ve taken to going out during the day with my camera; whether just going downtown or taking short day trips to interesting locations outside of Vegas. It’s been kind of nice. I’ve kind of gotten spoiled by actually having an abundance of light to use in making my compositions. I wasn’t really used to that. Kind of nice.
Back to the Dark Side
Seeing Todd’s work was just the inspiration I needed. I had kind of become a little burnt out on shooting the streets of Vegas at night, but seeing Todd’s beautiful night photography, with so much feel, really made me miss using the darkness of night as a major character in my photography. I’ve been happily going back out at night. It feels fresh again. Thank you Todd.
The Photos
Here are just a few photos of some of my recent shots taken after dark here in Vegas.
