Manna ~ For Thought…
This is a new recording released this year featuring the very remarkable trio of vocalist, Nora McCarthy; guitarist, Dom Minasi and the reed work of Ras Moshe. This project is a collection of some of the finest improvisational performances I’ve heard in a long time.
I’ve been familiar with Dom’s music for a number of years now and I’ve always admired his level of understanding and his performance of highly improvisational compositions; that incredibly fresh sense of harmonic structure and melodic fluidity. This new project is no exception to that level of improvisational performance, from all three of these artists.
One thing I love about this style of performance is the fresh nature of it; the level of close, intuitive interaction it requires between the performers. That’s what makes this album really stand out to me. These musicians respond to each other so intuitively, and as the compositions build, that level of communication and interaction grows, weaving together such a strong musical tapestry.
My personal favorite is track six; Snow Falls. That’s what you heard at the beginning of this recording. Such sensitive dynamics and such a perfect example of that intuitive level of compositional interaction. Just beautiful.
Nora’s voice is gorgeous; Dom’s warm tones are as beautiful as I’ve ever heard them, and Ras’ reed work is subtle and soft, but full and perfect. If you like improvisational music and listening to such accomplished artists such as these, you owe it to yourself to give this project a listen.
